First Generation 4-H Families Initiative K-State Research and ExtensionThe First Generation 4- H Families Initiative at Kansas State University, K-State Re- search and Extension (KSRE) is addressing the changing demographics across Kansas and engaging new and under- served youth.The KSRE 4-H Youth Development program isgrowing in Kansas by building staff capacity; engaging bilin- gual and bicultural interns to assist in reaching new fami- lies; designing culturally sen- sitive programming; and us- ing research-based strategies that attract and prepare vol- unteers to meet the demand.The goal of the initia- tive is to 1) pilot and establish new clubs in which the youthfully participate in KSRE 4-H projects and experiences that are relevant to their bicultur- al identity; 2) provide training and guidance to help staff and volunteers become cul- turally sensitive, and 3) exam- ine systems and processes that help KSRE 4-H youth de- velopment achieve the goals of the project and build sus- tainability for the future.As part of the First Generation 4-H Families initi- ative, youth participate in lo- cal and regional KSRE 4-H youth development events and in programs on the Kan- sas State University campus.Parents report that they value the KSRE 4-H pro- gram and the experiencesprepare their children to think about and set goals for the future, become acquaint- ed with opportunities for col- lege and career readiness and become more socially inte- grated into their communities through service.If You have any Ques- tions about the Initiative, use the link shown below to see the full information.
